Between film festivals and office film screenings, I’ve seen my fair share of food films lately. In case you’re looking for a little inspiration, or simply to be more informed, I’ve written up my thoughts on two food centric films.
This is a 2014 film by Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, that looks at tomato farmworkers in Florida and highlights workers in other food industries (i.e. wine). I found the film both eyeopening and inspiring. While it’s content is somewhat depressing, as most documentaries I watch are, the film ends on an uplifting note. The farmworkers are able to work together to make change happen.

The narrative of the film focuses on an intrepid and highly lauded group of tomato pickers from Southern Florida – the Coalition of Immokalee Workers or CIW – who are revolutionizing farm labor. Their story is one of hope and promise for the triumph of morality over corporate greed – to ensure a dignified life for farm workers and a more humane, transparent food chain.
Food Chains premiered at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival and screened subsequently at the Tribeca Film Festival and Guadalajara Film Festival. Food Chains will be released nationwide November 21st. The film’s Executive Producers include Eva Longoria and Eric Schlosser.”
This 2016 film is all about seeds! While it’s not available online (yet) there might be a screening near you. If it’s in your area, it’s well worth the ticket price. The visuals are breathtaking, as you travel the world to see how seed collectors are trying to preserve genetic diversity throughout the plant kingdom.
I never thought about “endangered” plants in the same way I think about “endangered” animals. The film presents an interesting argument for just how crucial seed preservation is. Key takeaways: grow your own food, save your seeds, and share your seeds with others. Here’s a summary below.

Ballot initiatives to label genetically modified foods have been proposed in U.S. cities from California to Connecticut—a direct threat to the profits of the Gene Giants and their Big Food cronies. Seed libraries, community gardens, and a new generation of passionate young farmers are cropping up to shift the balance toward a more sustainable and sovereign seed paradigm.
